The pancreas supplies the major digestive enzymeswhich catalyze the breakdown of fats, carbohydratesand protein, so that the breakdown products can beabsorbed in the upper small intestine. Although fatdigestion starts in the mouth with salivary lipase, mostfat triglycerides are digested by pancreatic lipase, whichis secreted by the exocrine pancreas into the duodenumof the intestine. Pancreatic lipase separates triglyceridesinto monoglycerides and free fatty acids, which areefficiently absorbed in the upper small intestine. Somecarbohydrate digestion takes place in the mouth bysalivary amylase, but pancreatic amylase is the majorcarbohydrate-digesting enzyme. It breaks down starchesinto maltose and maltotriose, which are furtherhydrolyzed into glucose by the disaccharidases of themucosal cells, and then absorbed. Protein digestion isinitiated in the stomach by pepsin and hydrochloric acid,which denature and divide large proteins into smallerpolypeptides. The pancreatic proteinases, trypsin andchymotrypsin, break down these polypeptides into freeamino acids, and di- or tri-peptides, which are directlyabsorbed by the intestinal mucosa. DGST SupportFormula™ provides high levels of catalytically activepancreatic enzymes which are specific for fats,carbohydrates and proteins. Bromelain acts to help prevent allergens from crossingthe gastrointestinal tract, and assists in the breakdown oflarge macromolecular protein complexes.
