The active ingredients of Uro-Pro™ have been shownto positively affect the structure and function of theprostate gland during the normal aging of men. SawPalmetto (Serenoa repens), aided by pygeum (Pygeumafricanum), inhibits the conversion of testosterone to itsmore active, and potentially deleterious form, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), via inhibition of alpha-5-reductase. Saw palmetto not only inhibits the binding ofDHT to cellular receptors, but also has alpha1-adrenoceptor-inhibitory properties. Alpha1-adrenoceptor antagonism may be responsible for sawpalmetto's therapeutic effect in supporting the urinarytract during the normal aging of men. Saw palmettoextracts have also been found to inhibit the biosynthesisof proinflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrieneswhich may exacerbate those symptoms.
Supplementation with Pygeum africanum extract, inmen 50 to 75 years, significantly improved severalaspects of prostate function, including nocturnalfrequency, maximum flow and volume. Pygeum extractdecreases prolactin and cholesterol levels in the prostate, which in turn decreases uptake and reduces the numberof binding sites for testosterone in the prostate. Inaddition, pygeum extract, like saw palmetto, interfereswith the synthesis of proinflammatory prostaglandins.Pumpkin seed is thought to have similarpharmacotherapeutic properties.
Vitamin E, zinc and proanthocyanidins provide potentantioxidant protection against oxidative damage to theprostate. The amino acids glycine, alanine and glutamicacid, as well as vitamin B-6 and vitamin A, have beensuggested to reduce proliferation of prostate tissue cells.
