As science continues to uncover connections betweenthe diseases of aging and free radical damage,antioxidants remain a vital safeguard in helping toprotect against the damage caused by free radicals.Diets high in antioxidants, as well as supplementationwith antioxidants have been shown to have aprotective effect in reducing cellular damage causedby free radicals. Specifically, tea has been used forhundreds of years by many cultures throughout theworld for its health promoting properties and hasbeen shown to be a powerful antioxidant. Whilemany people are familiar with green and black tea,white tea is less well known. Although white tea isderived from the same plant from which green andblack tea are made (Camellia sinensis), white tea isconsidered to be a more rare and unique product.The term white is derived from the high proportionof silvery buds on the plant at the time of harvesting,which tend to impart a white tint to the tea. Green teais often promoted for the fact that is it minimallyprocessed; however, white tea is the least processedof all the teas, and is rapidly steamed and dried afterpicking. This lack of processing results in a higherconcentration of polyphenols, and consequently,greater antioxidant activity. The apple, pomegranateand blueberry extracts present in FruiTEA-Max™alsocontribute significant antioxidant activity to thisformulation. In fact, pomegranate juice has beenshown to contain almost three times the totalantioxidant ability compared with similar amounts ofgreen tea or red wine.Measuring Antioxidant Activity -TheOxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity The oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC)assay is a method for quantifying the antioxidantstrength of substance (i.e. its ability to fight freeradicals). The method was developed in part at theUSDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Agingat Tufts University. The measurement involvescombining the sample to be tested (the antioxidant)with a fluorescent compound as well as a compoundthat generates free radicals at a known rate. As freeradicals are generated, the fluorescent compound isdamaged and subsequently loses its fluorescence.When the antioxidant is present, it absorbs the freeradicals being produced and therefore inhibits theloss of fluorescence by the fluorescent compound.The stronger the antioxidant is, the more the loss offluorescence will be inhibited. The measurement isstandardized against a water-soluble vitamin Ederivative (called Trolox) which has a known ORACvalue, and is reported in terms of Trolox equivalents(µmole TE). This method serves as an excellent wayto quantify the ability of various compounds toquench free radicals. ORAC values have beenmeasured for many fruits and vegetables as well asnumerous plant extracts. For example, a singleserving (1/2 cup) of fruits and vegetables yields anORAC value between 600 -800 µmoleTE. Based onthe recommendation that we should be consumingfive to nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day,one can tell that the ORAC value of a healthful dietwould be quite high. ORAC value is measured on every lot of FruiTEAMax,and is typically around 7,000 µmoleTE perserving which is the ORAC equivalent of 8 - 11servings of fruits and vegetables. While dietarysupplements do not take the place of a healthy, well-balanced diet, FruiTEA-Max™ can serve as anexcellent way for easily increasing antioxidant intake. Ingredients:
